Many of the parts of the horse chestnut tree, including the seeds, leaves, and bark, have been used medicinally. However, it is now believed that only the seeds of the Horse Chestnut offer proven medicinal value.

Aescin or escin is a mixture of saponins with anti-inflammatory, vasoconstrictorand vasoprotective effects found in Aesculus hippocastanum (the horse chestnut). Aescin is the main active compound in horse chestnut, and is responsible for most of its medicinal properties.
